Robert C. Currie Scholarships

About the Scholarship

The Robert C. Currie MTDA Student Scholarships will be awarded to two (2) Montana Digital Academy students who meet the qualifying requirements in the spring of their senior year.  The scholarships of five hundred dollars ($500.00) each are intended to benefit Montana Digital Academy students who have expanded their educational careers by successfully completing online courses through the Academy. To be eligible for one of the scholarships, a student must have completed and passed at least four (4) MTDA online classes during their high school career. Scholarship applicants must have applied to and been accepted by a Montana public, tribal, or private two or four-year college or university.

About Robert Currie

Robert Currie was the first executive director of Montana Digital Academy, serving in this role from 2010-2022.  Under his founding leadership, MTDA significantly contributed to Montana’s K-12 and higher education educational landscapes. Tens of thousands of Montana’s high school and middle school students have benefitted from successfully completing MTDA online courses, all taught by Montana licensed public school teachers, which has always been a point of pride for Mr. Currie. In 2012 with the generous support of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, he brought the readiness platform EdReady to Montana, making us the first in the nation to provide the EdReady online math and English support tool statewide to learners from elementary school through college and adult learners. The support from the Foundation meant they could use EdReady at no cost, allowing them to meet their educational challenges. While helping students has always been the most crucial role of the Academy, it has provided assistance, training, and support to teachers, counselors, administrators, and site facilitators at hundreds of Montana K-12 schools and higher education institutions.

As the executive director, Mr. Currie guided MTDA’s ascension into national leadership in online learning as a member of the Virtual Learning Leadership Alliance (VLLA), a national non-profit comprising sixteen statewide digital learning programs. He was a founding member of the VLLA and served as the organization’s first board president. Mr. Currie’s career in online learning began in 2003 when he was named the Executive Director of the Michigan Virtual School.  Before that appointment, he had a thirty-year career in public education in Michigan, holding the positions of district superintendent, assistant superintendent for curriculum, high school principal, and guidance counselor.  He began his career as a high school English and coach of several boys’ and girls’ athletic teams.
