Middle School Enrollment
A Checklist for Schools and Parents
Considering enrolling your child in Middle School classes?
This checklist is intended to assist parents in determining whether enrolling their child in middle school courses with MTDA is a good fit for their family. This is only one piece of the puzzle as your local public school is the ultimate authority of enrollment into any MTDA course. MTDA Middle School courses are 18-week, asynchronous classes and require 4-7 hours a week. It is important to have an honest conversation with your child about the time and attention that is required to be successful in this format. The following checklist will help guide your discussion.
Is MTDA a good fit for your child?
-
Does your child have a minimum of 4-7 hours per week, per course this semester to dedicate to online learning?
-
Does your child have a local school person they can contact if they need help or support when their teacher is not available?
-
Have you and your child discussed a daily schedule for working on their class?
-
Does your child have regular access to a computer with broadband Internet?
-
Does your child have a quiet, comfortable workspace?
Successful Student Profile
- Student is a self-directed learner and demonstrates a high level of comfort with following basic directions and understanding new material.
- Student is comfortable with an asynchronous course which can be done at a time that is convenient for them within well defined weekly timelines.
- Student has strong computer skills and experience using a word processor, email, and internet browsers.
- Student is willing to advocate for themselves and ask questions of their MTDA remote teacher and/or an adult in their local school.
As you can tell by this checklist, enrolling your child in Middle School courses with MTDA will require a similar level of commitment to course work as if your child was in a face-to-face classroom but, in addition, will require your child to be organized and self-motivated. If this sounds like your child, your next step is to contact your local school to inquire about enrollment options.
