EdReady English

Mastering College-Readiness Level Communication

Program Summary

EdReady English is an online, personalized system available at no cost to Montana students. It is specifically designed to help students build and refine the reading, writing, and grammar skills essential for success in entry-level college English and humanities courses.

It works just like the math program: students take a diagnostic assessment that quickly identifies their current readiness level in key areas of English Language Arts (ELA).

EdReady English is more than just a grammar review; it’s a comprehensive tool for developing the advanced academic literacy skills needed for post-secondary success.

Student studies on computer at home.

Reading

Identifying Main Ideas (Stated and Implied), Evaluating Source Bias, Making Inferences, Logical Fallacies, Understanding Figurative Language, Using Context Clues.

Writing

Developing Thesis Statements, Creating Effective Introductory and Concluding Paragraphs, Using Evidentiary Support, Blending Source Material, and Paraphrasing/Quoting.

Grammar

Subject-Verb Agreement, Run-on Sentences, Comma Splices, Sentence Fragments, Punctuation Rules, Commonly Confused Words, and Active/Passive Voice.

The system then generates a customized study path filled with media-rich learning resources. By focusing only on the concepts they need to master, students efficiently fill knowledge gaps, achieve their target readiness score, and gain the confidence required to succeed in college writing and reading.

How Schools Use EdReady English

Montana schools integrate EdReady English to provide targeted support and a clear pathway to post-secondary readiness:

  • ELA Skill Intervention: Advanced middle school and high school teachers use EdReady to differentiate instruction, assigning personalized learning paths to students who need to revisit foundational ELA skills from earlier grades to succeed in their current high school coursework.
  • Standardized Test Preparation (ACT/SAT): The content aligns with the reading and writing portions of major college entrance exams, offering an individualized prep tool that focuses students’ time on their weakest areas. <link to test prep>
  • College Writing Placement: Montana colleges use EdReady English scores to determine if a student is ready for a credit-bearing writing course (like WRIT 101) or if they need co-requisite support. By using the program, students can complete the necessary preparation before they step onto a college campus. <link to placement>

Data & Outcomes: Building Confident Writers

While EdReady English is a newer offering than the math program, its personalized approach has demonstrated success in building student confidence and readiness across the state:

  • Targeted Remediation: By completing the EdReady study path, one community college found students who scored below the placement threshold for college-level writing were given a path to assure best preparation for their first credit-bearing writing course.
  • Practice taking online tests: Educators report the system’s ability to provide a low-stakes testing option has allowed them opportunities to provide students with strategies to approach breaking down online reading samples and effectively answering online test questions.
  • Confidence & Mastery: The system’s immediate feedback and clear path to mastery help students realize they are capable of achieving their goals, directly addressing the anxiety sometimes associated with college-level writing.
